Madison, at the time of the Constitutional Convention, was a 36-year-old former Virginia state legislator and continental congressman. He would, of course, go on to take a leadership role in the crafting and ratifying of the U.S. Constitution and the passage of the Bill of Rights before becoming the nation's third secretary of state and fourth president.
